North East Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE CCIE)

The North East Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE‑CCIE) is a flagship initiative of the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, dedicated to grassroots development, civic engagement, and sustainable transformation in the North East region. Formerly known as the Centre for Development of North East Region (CeDNER), the Centre builds on over a decade of experience in enabling inclusive, participatory, and locally grounded development efforts.?

NE‑CCIE prioritizes hands-on, action-driven programming while drawing on research and field-based insights to ensure contextual relevance and continuous learning. It serves as a platform where academic understanding is translated into practical solutions, designed in close collaboration with communities and stakeholders.

Guided by the values of sustainability, collaboration, and social equity, NE‑CCIE works with students, schools, colleges, youth groups, entrepreneurs, civil society organizations, and government institutions to address pressing developmental challenges—from educational access and leadership development to sustainable waste management and livelihood generation.

Through diverse initiatives—ranging from leadership programmes for school administrators to student-focused capacity building based on entrepreneurship and community-based environmental engagement—NE‑CCIE strives to deliver interventions that are inclusive, locally responsive, and outcomes-driven.

VISION AND MISSION

NE‑CCIE envisions a resilient and self-reliant North East where communities are active participants in shaping their own development trajectories. It seeks to foster empowered ecosystems through sustained collaboration, local innovation, and inclusive engagement.

In pursuit of this vision, the Centre advances its mission through the following strategic focus areas:

  1. Fostering Community-Led Transformation
Implementing grassroots initiatives that support schools, colleges, youth, local government and non-government agencies and entrepreneurs through context-specific, capacity-building programs.
  2. Encouraging Informed and Reflective Practice
Drawing on field insights and research efforts to strengthen the relevance and effectiveness of community interventions.
  3. Building Future-Ready Leadership
Equipping students, educators, and young professionals with essential skills in leadership, communication, and digital literacy.
  4. Facilitating Cross-Sector Collaborations
Partnering with government, academia, and civil society to co-create and implement practical, community-focused solutions.

OUR APPROACH

NE‑CCIE functions as an action-oriented centre that embeds itself in community contexts, listens actively to local voices, and co-develops solutions that are responsive and sustainable. Its initiatives range from business workshops in schools and colleges that foster an entrepreneurial mindset, to teacher training programmes and regional roundtable conferences on issues such as waste management—bringing together policy, practice, and people.

In all its work, NE‑CCIE reflects IIM Shillong’s broader mission of ethical leadership and sustainable development—grounded not just in knowledge, but in empathy, accountability, and long-term impact. Through its evolving body of work, the Centre continues to contribute to a more equitable and empowered North East—one community at a time.
